Murals at the South West Utah Youth Center

 Transforming Spaces with Art

Bringing color and inspiration into a building with mural art can transform attitudes. “ One Kind Act a Day and The Division of Juvenile Justice Youth Services hosted a special event celebrating creativity, growth, and the transformative power of kindness. The unveiling included two murals created by youth from the local South West Utah Youth Center as part of a project teaching compassion, self-awareness, and kindness through art. These murals are more than just artwork. It's a symbol of community and a reflection of the positive change taking place within these young lives. It represents their voices, their potential, and their commitment to building a kinder world, beginning with themselves,” said Josie Thacker, Public Information Officer.

The new mural shows the transition from winter to summer with inspirational quotes and resolute bears. Michelle Sanchez talked about not being defined by our worst days, but seeking a better future. It was obvious that the young men who had worked on the mural were proud of their efforts as each was celebrated for a trait of value like respect and tenacity. Kimber Cottam and Baylee Wiener explained the process of brainstorming, rough drafts, and the actual painting of the mural. They helped the participants finalize the  design and supervised the painting.

The Center staff were also celebrated for their caring support and service during the program.

Paiute youth advocates provided a memorable performance with flute, drums, and tribal songs. 

Other mural sponsors and partners included Stitching Hearts World Wide, Switchpoint Community Resource Center, Tiny Tims Foundation for Kids, and Youth Futures. 

Sometimes it takes many years to see the fruits of our Cedar City Arts Council mini-grants. In 2016 we gave a grant to help get a mural at the South West Youth Center in the gym. This was the first time I was able to see it. I love that it shows different professions, our beautiful red hill scenery, and a sense of possibility.

Art is transformative and can be inspirational. The murals take blank walls and fill them with color and hope for a good future. Congratulations to all involved in this project. (Photos courtesy of the South West Youth Center).
